Artone Studio vs Groto: Design and Build Retainer vs Hour-Based SaaS Design Subscription

Artone Studio vs Groto: compare pricing, hours, development and fit to choose between a design and build retainer and an hour-based SaaS design subscription.

For technology companies past pre-seed that want one senior team to decide what to build and then design and ship it, Artone Studio is the better fit, while Groto suits SaaS and AI teams that want a dedicated designer for a set number of hours each day.

TL;DR

Artone Studio and Groto both sell ongoing design work on a monthly plan, but they package it very differently. Groto rents you a dedicated designer by the hour, from 2 to 6 hours a day, on plans from $2,199 to $5,999 a month, with website development sold as a separate add-on. Artone's $5,000 Retainer covers product, web, brand, development and motion in one package, measured by requests rather than hours, with our founder leading every engagement. Groto is a good choice for SaaS and AI product teams that mainly need embedded UX and UI capacity. For technology companies past pre-seed that need product judgment and shipped work from the same small senior team, Artone is the better fit.

What each studio is

Artone Studio is an AI-native design and build partner for technology companies, running since December 2022. We cover product design, web design, brand identity, development and motion under one roof. Before anything gets designed, we work through what the product needs next and why, then the same team designs it, builds it and ships it. Client websites are built in Framer, and we are an Official Framer Expert agency.

Groto describes itself as an AI-first UX design studio for AI and SaaS products. Its site lists AI product design, SaaS product design, AI chatbot and agent design, UI/UX, brand and marketing design, UX audits, design systems and website design and development. It says it is backed by a 20-person studio, and its own Clutch summary places its headquarters in Delhi, India. The team works Monday to Friday on Indian Standard Time hours.

Pricing and value

Artone runs two retainers:

  • Retainer, $5,000/month: one request at a time, with updates every other business day, and every service included.
  • Retainer Plus, $9,000/month: two requests at once, each updated every other business day, instead of paying $10,000 for two Retainers.

Both can be paused for up to 60 days or cancelled anytime, and we refund 75% if the partnership is not a fit in the first week. For a single defined deliverable, we also run custom projects from a $2,000 minimum, priced as one package and paid 50/25/25.

Groto publishes three subscription plans, each priced in a range depending on whether you pay monthly or quarterly:

  • Starter, $2,199 to $2,399/month: one designer for 2 hours a day, 5 days a week, with project manager support.
  • Part-Time, $3,999 to $4,399/month: one designer for 4 hours a day, plus a dedicated UX strategist for audits, roadmap and product KPIs.
  • Full-Time, $5,399 to $5,999/month: one designer for 6 hours a day, with the same strategist support.

No-code website development is an add-on at $799 to $999 a month, which Groto describes as ideal for landing pages and MVPs. Outside the subscriptions, Groto says fixed projects start at $5,000 and hourly work is $50 an hour. Plans can be paused for up to 3 weeks per quarter and cancelled anytime, and Groto does not offer refunds, converting unused days into design credit valid for 90 days instead.

The practical difference is what the fee buys. Groto's fee buys a designer's hours, and development sits on top of that. Artone's fee buys a senior team working through your requests, and development is already inside the $5,000 Retainer, so a team can spend one month on product screens and the next on shipping a site without adding anything. If you are weighing a subscription against a fixed project, our guide to design retainers vs projects walks through the trade-off, and you can talk to us about your roadmap if you want a straight answer on which fits.

Delivery and speed

Groto says you meet your designer within 24 hours, and that most tasks are delivered within 1 to 3 business days depending on complexity and plan. Part-Time and Full-Time clients also receive a UX audit within two weeks. On Clutch, Groto's schedule score is lower than its other scores, and the review summary notes some clients reported delays.

Artone works one request at a time on the Retainer and two at once on Retainer Plus, with updates every other business day. A request can be small enough to finish by the next update or large enough to run across several. We are an AI-native studio and use AI throughout our workflow, but the product calls and final review stay with our founder. The aim is fewer rounds spent on the wrong thing, rather than a fixed delivery clock.

Groto's depth in AI product UX is real, and its site goes into specific patterns for copilots, agents and chatbots. Artone's edge is that every discipline lives in one package, and the person who decides what to build is the same person reviewing what ships.

Collaboration

Artone clients get a private Slack channel for briefs, feedback and delivery, plus optional weekly strategy calls. Our founder leads every project, so there is no account manager between you and the person making product decisions. You own every file, asset and Framer site we make.

Groto assigns a dedicated designer as your main contact, backed by a project manager on every plan. Work runs async with daily updates, and Groto says weekly meetings are scheduled to suit your time zone, with at least half a business day of overlap.

Clients, credibility and recognition

Artone has delivered 80+ projects for companies with a combined valuation of over $1B, and our clients have raised over $10M in combined funding. Two out of three clients come back for more work. Our work has been recognized by Awwwards, Effie Awards, Contra, Landbook and Orpetron, we were nominated for Framer Site of the Year, and we are an Official Framer Expert agency.

Groto holds a 4.9 rating from 14 reviews on Clutch, where reviewers praise its UI/UX quality and communication. Its site says it has delivered 400+ products for clients in 30+ countries, and names work for Camb.ai and IVHQ.

When Artone is the better fit

  • You are a funded technology company and need someone to help decide what to build, not only to fill a designer's hours.
  • You want development included from day one, without stacking an add-on on your design plan.
  • Your priorities shift between product, web, brand and motion month to month, and you want one package that covers all of them.
  • You want the senior person making product calls to also review every deliverable.
  • Your marketing site runs on Framer, or you want it to, and you want an Official Framer Expert team building it.
  • You occasionally need a defined piece of work, and a custom project from $2,000 fits better than a subscription.

When Groto is a good fit

  • You mainly need embedded UX and UI capacity for an AI or SaaS product and want to buy it by the hour.
  • A few hours of design a day is enough, and the $2,199 Starter plan covers it.
  • You want a UX audit and a strategist focused on product KPIs as part of your plan.
  • You want to try the team on a real task during a free trial before committing.

Final take

Groto is a focused AI and SaaS UX studio with transparent hour-based pricing and a strong Clutch record, and it makes sense for product teams that want a dedicated designer on a predictable schedule. For technology companies past pre-seed that want product thinking, design and development from one senior team in a single retainer, Artone is the better choice. If that sounds like where you are, get in touch with our team and we will tell you honestly whether a Retainer, Retainer Plus or a custom project fits your next quarter.
